My preliminary goal as researcher in East Norrbotten is to identify concrete development issues which in a network economy can bring together companies, to show that such collaboration can work and contribute to the favourable development of both companies and the region where they are located.

The purpose of her postgraduate project is to evaluate the suitability of the perch (Perca fluviatilis) for intensive farming in Norrbotten. Perch have not previously been intensively farmed in East Norrbotten, and knowledge of intensive farming of this species is severely limited. It is therefore of considerable interest to evaluate whether intensive perch farming is feasible, under what circumstances and what cost.

During the project period, knowledge to enable the practical implementation of intensive perch farming will be assembled and spread in the region, and models for growth and economic profitability will be developed.

My research project aims to develop agriculture in eastern Norrbotten by ‘domesticating’ wild bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.). One of the underlying ideas is that the berry marketing company Polarica AB no longer sees a future in harvesting wild berries, while the market is growing. Production of berries, such as bilberries, must be made more profitable. The second underlying idea behind this research is that bilberry as a species could become an important supplementary crop for farmers in eastern Norrbotten. It can provide added stimulus to work the soil in the north, and abandoned overgrown fields can be given new life.
